FIRST ESTABLISHED IN 1870, WHITE ROCK VINEYARDS IS A FAMILY-OWNED WINERY IN THE NAPA VALLEY FOCUSED ON PRODUCING TERROIR-DRIVEN WINE FROM PRIMARILY OLD VINES. THEIR WINES ARE KNOWN FOR BALANCE, COMPLEXITY, AND THE AGE-ABILITY WHICH, WHEN COMBINED WITH A VISIT TO THE ESTATE, CREATES LONG-TERM CUSTOMERS WHO ARE CONNECTED TO THE LAND, PLACE AND PEOPLE PRODUCING WHITE ROCK WINES.
Terra Jane Albee is the Director of Sales and Marketing for White Rock and is passionate about creating a unique, personal experience for White Rock’s customers. She focuses on creating close relationships with customers and wine club members, keeping track of personal preferences, important dates such as birthdays or anniversaries, and taking notes on each visit to the estate.
“One of the main things that makes White Rock special, besides the quality of the wine, is that it's really a very personal experience when people come here, and they always meet somebody in the family. Guests leave feeling like they've made a friend and they're a part of this process.”
As White Rock’s wine club grew, it became difficult to manage. Like many small wineries just starting a wine club, they were using a combination of Excel, Quickbooks, and Authorize.net to track club member information, create orders, and process payments. Needless to say, it was a time consuming and mistake-prone process. They went about looking for a solution.
“With Authorize.net, every time you entered an order, we had to enter the order details in code-form in a tiny space. With the coding, there were a million ways to make mistakes and then we couldn't really run reports the way that we wanted, so there was no keeping track of what we sold. That part was nearly impossible.”
After evaluating several winery specific eCommerce platforms, White Rock chose VineSpring.
“We did demos with four or five different platforms and talked to other people in the industry about what they were using and what they were happy with. In the end, we felt VineSpring had the features we wanted at the right price. Also, the support has been great.”
One feature that stood out to White Rock was how easy it is to integrate with their WordPress website. Using the VineSpring “plug-ins”, White Rock’s web developer seamlessly integrated the eCommerce experience with their overall site. The process was straightforward and the result was a great path-to-purchase for White Rock’s customers.
“It's really intuitive and user-friendly, a pretty simple platform. To me, that's a good software, if it can be for everybody, no matter how deep you want to get into it. So if you just need to put in orders and you don't need to know anything else, that's super easy to learn how to do. But if you want to dive in and really be able to capture all of these other kinds of information, which is more what I do, it is a powerful tool.”
After adopting VineSpring, they have seen a big impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of managing their members.
“Just going from almost no ability to track things to the ability to track things is pretty massive for us. The customer purchase history report is great - I can easily find people who haven't bought in x amount of time and contact them. Being able to parse the data is something that we definitely did not have the ability to do before.”
And, they have significantly grown their DTC program with the support of VineSpring.
“Starting to use VineSpring coincided with also starting a more meaningful and intentional DTC program. When we started our wine club in 2013, it was 40 members and now we have 600 members.”
“We've been growing a ton and I think that part of that growth is having an ECommerce platform.”
